Diet and Vitamins
- If I take nutritional bars or diet bars, should I let my study nurse know?
- Yes. It would be helpful if you brought one of the packaged bars to your next study visit.
The staff could read the nutrition label to record the necessary information and advise you if the amount of
vitamin E or selenium in these bars meets the study requirements for acceptable limits.
-
- If you think selenium and vitamin E are helpful, why don't I just take them on my own?
- We don't know if these supplements at the dosage and concentration levels we provide can
prevent prostate cancer. If we knew vitamin E and/or selenium to be helpful, we wouldn't need to do SELECT.
But because it isn't known if they are helpful or even harmful in large doses, we cannot make that recommendation.
Those are the questions we expect to answer with this study using relatively small supplement doses.
