Study Requirements
- What if I decide to take an additional multivitamin or other vitamin supplement that contains selenium or vitamin E while I am on SELECT?
- SELECT is a trial to see if taking selenium and/or vitamin E supplements at the dosage and concentration levels
we provide can prevent prostate cancer. While past studies suggest that selenium and vitamin E may prevent prostate cancer,
it has not been proven whether this combination works. We hope that by your taking the time and interest to join SELECT, you
want to help answer this important question. Stopping our Study Supplements or taking more selenium and/or vitamin E on your
own does not drop you from the study but neither would it be helpful to the study. Before making any decision about taking
additional multivitamins or stopping the Study Supplements, you should contact your study site to discuss your plans.
-
- Should I stop my SELECT Study Supplements if I have been put on blood thinners or if my aspirin dose has been increased?
- Contact your Study Site and let the staff know the name of the medication, the date you began or will begin taking the blood thinner
or if your aspirin dose increased. It is important that we know the reason your doctor made these changes in you medication plan. The Study Site
staff will advise you on how to continue with regards to your Study Supplements.
-
- Will I be able to participate in other medical studies or clinical trials while I am a member of SELECT?
- Call your Study Site before you participate in other medical studies or clinical trials. If there is a conflict between the SELECT Study
Supplements and what the other studies or clinical trials are using, then you will be advised by the staff on how to proceed.
-
- I travel a lot. How will this affect my participation in the trial? How will I continue to get my Study Supplements?
- If you will be gone for more than a month, please contact your Study Site before you leave and tell them when you plan to return home.
If you will not have enough Study Supplements or our special Multivitamins to last through your trip, the Study Site staff can make arrangements to get
you more before you leave. If a Study Site visit or phone call is scheduled during the time you are out of town, call the Study Site before you leave to reschedule.
-
- What if I move out of the area?
- There are over 400 SELECT Study Sites located all over the United States, including Puerto Rico, and Canada.
To see where a Study Site is located in or near your new location, click on Study Sites. Contact your Study Site
staff and request to be transferred to a Study Site closer to your new location. They will take care of the paperwork and tell you what you need to know about the transfer.
-
- How will I get the results of the SELECT study?
- The SELECT participant newsletter will have a brief summary of the results. The results will be published in a medical journal
after the study has been analyzed. The newsletter will also provide you with the name of the journal where the results are published.
-
- What information is collected if I sign a release of medical information form?
- There may be many medical release forms for you to sign throughout the course of the study. These forms
usually give us permission to request medical records for a certain medical test or health problem you told us about. These
release forms are usually good for a few months, which are why you may be asked to sign a few different ones, as they will
expire. Your Study Site staff should explain what medical facts or records they are sending for before you are asked to sign
the release form. Read each form carefully and feel free to ask your Study Site staff questions.
-
- Am I allowed to donate blood while I am participating in SELECT?
- Although SELECT does not have limits, check with the local blood bank. It is important that you tell
the blood bank that you are participating in SELECT. Some blood banks do not accept blood donations from people
that are participating in a clinical trial. Also, if you are a participant at a Study Site that does annual blood
draws; you might want to check with your Study Site staff, as they may not want you to donate blood within a few days
of your next visit.
-
- Should I call my study nurse if I have medical procedures or hospital stays?
- Yes. Contact your Study Site and let the staff there know when and where you were hospitalized. They will ask
you a few other questions and advise you on how to proceed on SELECT.
-
- Do I get free medical care?
- Your SELECT Study Site visits; Study Supplements, and Multivitamins are given
to you free of charge. Remember, SELECT is not meant to replace your regular health care
provider. Please review your Consent Form for more information about medical care.
